Andrew Warner of Mixergy.com has put together some incredible interviews with some amazing people with purpose of helping entreprenuers create better Internet companies. Amazingly, all of the interviews are free!

There was one issue I encountered that minimized my joy a tiny fraction at finding this treasure trove; 1) not enough time to listen to them all right now! and 2) no one place to go for an easy short list of all of the interviews (this is undoubtedly because Andrew is busy creating awesome interviews!)

In this post, I have created a list of all the interviews in a easy to browse format that takes you directly to the interview page for your convenience. On that interview page, Andrew has an introductory video, written summary of the interview, streaming audio and download link. Enjoy! I sure am.

The interviews are listed starting from the most recent:

This howto should help ease the process of installing Microsoft Office 2007 under Wine 1.0 in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. I should note that after all was said and done, I ended up going back to OpenOffice.org and sometimes AbiWord. There were just too many small bugs that made the experience frustrating. If I need to run Office 2007, I now do so in either VMWare or Windows XP.

Get the WineTricks package which will allow you to install needed run times for Microsoft Office 2007.

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks

Make the file executable and transfer to your /usr/local/bin directory for easy execution.

chmod a+x winetricks
sudo mv winetricks /usr/local/bin
winecfg

Change the Windows Version to Windows Vista and click Apply.

Go to the libraries tab and add an override for rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll, then click OK.

Now you will need to update a needed dll.

mv ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/rpcrt4.dll ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/rpcrt4.bak
wget http://download210.mediafire.com/mvjci9edynsg/njtut9aswdk/rpcrt4.dll
mv rpcrt4.dll ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
winecfg

mv ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/msxml3.dll msxml3.bak

Run winetricks and install the run times.

winetricks

A popup will appear with a list of run times like below:

Here are the run times I checked:

MS .NET 2.0
fontfix
gdiplus
msi2
msxml3
allfonts
riched20
riched30
vb3run
vb4run
vb5run
vb6run
vcrun2005sp1
vcrun2008

Grab some tea or coffee, this will take a bit… You will now go through a bunch of installers.

Grab your Microsoft Office 2007 CD and install the application. Be patient as it may seem like its stalling around 60% through the process.

37 signals knows how to promote their sites with low overhead. They have a built a large user base around those promotions. Take a look at the formula they use, and think about how you can incorporate their ideas into your next Web 2.0 project.

1. Overview: Explain your app and its benefits.Put yourself in the shoes of potential users and write the website copy squarely directed at them in easy to understand, jargon free terms. Don’t focus on features, keep the copy focused on benefits. This resource will help you do that.

2. Tour: Guide people through various features.

Make sure to use scenarios where the features are being used in the context of some benefit to the user.

3. Screen captures and videos: Show people what the app actually looks like and how to use it.

For those without the budget for Camtasia Studio Version 5 or Adobe Captivate 3.0, check out the free CamStudio or xvidcap.

4. Manifesto: Explain the philosophy and ideas behind it.

For inspiration, check out the Manifesto for Agile Software Development.

5. Case Studies: Provide real life examples that show what’s possible.

You can make these up in the beginning by telling a story of how you envision the service to be used. Once you launch the beta, follow up with your testers and get some stories from them. Pitch to influencer’s, whom you invite to the beta, as a promotional opportunity for them and offer a link to their website at the end of their case study.

6. Buzz: Testimonial quotes from customers, reviews, press, etc.

Take screen shots of press coverage and/or scan paper based coverage to highlight on your website. Use your blog to link to all of the places where your product is mentioned on the web. Utilize drip marketing, combined with prizes, to solicit testimonial quotes.

7. Forum: Offer a place for members of the community to help one another.

There are many free, open source solutions to implement a forum. Here are a few:

phpBB

Vanilla

YaBB

You may also consider using a service such as Stickam.com for live town hall meetings with your users.

Many people I have talked with about non-profit fund raising, seem to focus on the large sponsorship opportunities. While that is ultimate goal, there are many opportunities to get help at smaller levels that can eventually lead to the large sponsorships. If you have a non-profit and your fund raising is stalled, read on.

Create the Value Proposition

Understand what value is present for both the sponsor and the people the non-profit serves. Here are some items to consider:

What will you offer the sponsor?

Number of eyeballs

Exposure to influential people and media

Branding

Generate a book of testimonials and make it readily available to the sponsor.

Taylor your messaging to the sponsor in terms of the benefit to the sponsor.

Have a list of testimonials from previous sponsors.

Mention current sponsors.

Clearly explain what the sponsorship will be used for.

Build Your List

Based on the value proposition, you are now ready to build a list of potential sponsors. Here are some suggestions for building that list:

Previous sponsors.

Call previous sponsors and ask for referrals.

Visit online communities that relate to your value proposition and see who is sponsoring them.

Ask non-profits that are working toward your same goals about who is sponsoring them.

Use press releases to call for sponsors and direct them to your website (or phone number) where they can enter their information.

Create a Script

I don’t recommend that you read from a script when calling on potential sponsors; however, it will be helpful to write out what you want to say. Write several different scripts with the same underlying message.

Practice

Once you have written out your scripts, memorize them and practice in front of the mirror. Be sure to smile, standing up can help also (use this method when making the actual calls also). Then call on some friends and ask them for a critique as you “cold call” them.

Review ideas about taking the cold out of cold calls.

Execute & Record

Before you begin calling, use a CRM system to help you manage. In this case, I recommend ZohoCRM because it is free for three users and has all the power you need. If that sounds daunting, then start with a simple spreadsheet.

Here are some key data points that you need to record for each call:

Contact information

Name and contact information of the decision maker

Script used

Result of call

Follow up date

At the end of each day, review your notes, and think of ways that you can improve.

Follow Up

Persistence and determination can go along way in making things happen. Make sure to set a contact follow up date in your system after each call. Remember that timing is key. Many times the person you are talking to may be under serious stress or simply just in a bad mood.

What methods have worked for you to raise money for your non-profit?

If you are faced with the daunting task of working through a cold call list, these tips should help you increase your chances of success.

1. Determine Your Goals

Here are some suggested goals:

Fully understand how your product or service matches the needs of the market you are targeting.

Create a list of questions that demonstrate your research into market needs.

Create a list of ideas that help your target market cut costs, generate sales, increase productivity or gain competitive advantage.

Look at your competitors and determine how you will differentiate.

2. Find a Point of Entry

Determine what department would be most receptive to your value proposition.

3. Learn About The Business

The amount of time you spend on this will be directly correlated to the value you expect from the prospect conversion.

Following are some key areas to research:

Industry trends

High priority quarterly or yearly goals

Key issues important to the business

Financial drivers

Product and service lines

Competitors

Key customers

Primary decision makers

4. Search for Openings

Look for information about challenges the market is facing or long and short term goals and objectives you can help the market achieve.

5. Understand their Lingo

To better speak the same language as your target market, examine their marketing materials, website and phone interactions to determine their lingo.

References and Resources
